FCC Kaduna, Cooperative Leaders Partner with KMDC to Reform Artisanal and Solid Minerals Cooperatives
KADUNA, NIGERIA — In a major step toward formalizing and transforming the solid minerals sector in Kaduna State, a high-level joint delegation led by the Federal Cooperative College (FCC), Kaduna, paid a strategic courtesy and presentation visit to the management of the Kaduna Mining Development Company (KMDC).
The delegation was headed by the Provost of the College, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awwal, alongside executives from prominent partner societies:
Impact Multipurpose Cooperative Society Kaduna, led by Dr. Suleiman.
Zaria Affiliated Multipurpose Cooperative Society, led by Mohammed Ardo and his executive team.
The joint delegation was warmly received at the KMDC headquarters by the General Overseer, Caleb Guraza, alongside the Executive Director of Operations, the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, and other supporting management staff.
Outcomes of CESDES 2026 Summit
This historic engagement comes as a direct result of an official call for audience, letter of appreciation, and proposal for mutual support written by Dr. Abdullahi Maikudi Nuhu, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESDES) 2026 Summit recently hosted at Federal Cooperative College, Kaduna.
Building on the actionable recommendations from the CESDES 2026 Summit, the visit sought to operationalize inter-agency collaboration between academic institutions, active cooperative societies, and state mineral development bodies.
Key Highlights of the Presentation
The core focus of the visit was a technical presentation titled “Integrating Cooperation Reform for Artisanal and Solid Minerals Cooperatives in Kaduna State.”
Presenting the framework, the delegation emphasized the urgent need to transition informal artisanal miners into structured, legally recognized, and commercially viable cooperative enterprises. The strategic framework focuses on three key pillars:
Formalization & Regulation: Organizing independent artisanal operators into registered cooperative hubs to enhance safety, environmental compliance, and legal standing.
Capacity Enhancement: Delivering targeted technical training, occupational safety standards, and financial literacy through FCC Kaduna’s specialized academic modules.
Access to Capital & Markets: Utilizing cooperative structures to give artisanal miners better access to credit, modern equipment, and direct market access, reducing reliance on informal middle channels.
Speaking during the presentation, Provost Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awwal reiterated the College’s dedication to providing academic guidance, research support, and manpower development to ensure cooperative reforms yield sustainable economic growth for Kaduna State.
KMDC Reaffirmation and Next Steps
In his response, the General Overseer of KMDC, Caleb Guraza, commended the leadership of FCC Kaduna, CesDes 2026 summit committee, and the participating cooperative executives for their proactive initiative. He noted that formalizing artisanal miners through cooperative frameworks aligns perfectly with state government objectives to drive solid mineral growth and community development.
The interactive session concluded with an agreement to form a joint working group to outline actionable roll-out steps for artisanal mining cooperative frameworks across key mining sites in Kaduna State.
